Nik J Designs came to be in the Fall of 2011. After a move from Chicago to Madison, I was lucky to have the opportunity for a career change. Always having an unexplored creative side, I inherited my grandmother’s 1970’s Viking Husqvarna sewing machine, taught myself how to sew and haven’t looked back.
As I have continued to grow and learn in this business, I have refined my skills and interests. Transitioning into textile design was a natural one for me.
Inspired by both my Scandinavian and Latvian family roots, I take traditional Latvian folk symbols to create modern prints. Each of my textiles starts with the sketch pad, from there, digital images are created and my patterns come to life. These images are then printed on eco-friendly fabrics and fabrics are sewn into products in my Madison, WI studio. My designs have simple and natural shapes with great pops of color which elevate everyday items into something fun and unexpected.
Although I am sad that I won’t be seeing you all in person this year, I am feeling grateful to participate in this year’s virtual Dane Handmade. I will be featuring some of my best sellers again this year – zipper pouches, fabric bins, tote bags and more.
In the spirit of working from home, I also pulled lots of fabric stashes off my shelves. So in addition to some of my custom designed fabrics, I will have a wide variety of favorite finds from other designers.
I hope you find something you love in my shop. As always please message me for any special requests. I will also be happy to offer free delivery or curbside pickup for anyone in Madison and surrounding communities.
